So far in this blog I have been focusing on my mother as my role model. A couple of weeks ago I had my first daughter. Now the meaning of this message has deepened for me. I am learning about the positive example of my mom as I seek to pass this legacy on to my own daughter! I can't believe there will now be a sweet little girl observing what I do. I hope and pray that I will not let her down.

Mom Knows Best!

This post is a little bit less serious, but still true!

So, my Mom never liked J. Crew. I wasn't sure entirely why until last month...While walking out of J. Crew I felt a terrible pain on the back of my foot. There was a screw sticking out of the door and it got stuck in my foot. Yikes! I am still recovering now. I have come to like J. Crew less after this experience...I should have trusted Mom a long time ago. She always seems to know best, even if I don't understand at the time!

Happy Mother's Day

I want to wish my Mom a Happy Mother's Day! Not only am I grateful for her example, but I am also so grateful for all that she has done for me and my family.

The Truth Is...

It is hard to know who you can trust these days, but I always know that I can trust my Mom 100%! I can trust her with my "secrets." I can trust her to be consistent. I know that she would never lie to me. She does not tell half truths or withhold truth with the intention to deceive. This honesty so consistent! It is also refreshing!

When we were little, Mom would read us the story of "The Little White Lie" to teach us the impact of even teeny tiny fibs. I think it is thanks to my Mom that today I cannot tell a lie to save my life. :)

Thanks Mom--I am so grateful I can trust you!

What Not to Wear

I never saw my Mom dress in a way that compromised her standards, not even once! She never seemed to make an exception for a fad or a "cute" outfit. I am so proud of her for this! This is just one way I have noticed a mom's example example can go a long way in teaching children and others. Contrasting this role model to our society today...we seem to be getting the message from the media that modesty barely even exists anymore. It is so hard to find a skirt that is long enough this year! (sad!)

I loved Elaine Dalton's talk in the Young Women General Broadcast this past March. She talked about "True Beauty"...beauty that cannot be purchased or painted on--a beauty that is earned over the years through living virtuously, loving others, and striving to develop our talents. My Mom has taught me that this true beauty is only showcased through modest dress--and oh how it sparkles and shines!

Children Welcome

My Mom is so good with children, and she was always so happy to have a new baby. She would say that "we will always welcome children to come to our family." I loved how she reminded us these babes were so recently with our Heavenly Father, in heaven...and how pure they are. My Mom is an example to me of treasuring the sanctity of human life.

Importance of Being a Mother

One thing I definitely learned from my Mom is the importance of being a mother. She would regularly tell me "Being a Mom is the greatest job there is, don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise." I thought this was kind of funny and cute while I was young, but it actually hit home hard right when I needed it to. I am so grateful I was able to earn my Master's Degree and land an amazing job working for a large Health Care system in Utah. Continuing my professional opportunities started to sound more and more appealing and glamorous.

When I found out I was pregnant I was surprised at how torn I felt. As I made the necessary decisions about whether I would go back to work, my Mom's words continued to run through my mind, and I followed her advice on a leap of faith. That was one of the best decisions I ever made: to quit my job to be with James full time. I am so grateful I didn't miss a smile or first step. Of course, if out of necessity I had to work, things would be different--but while I had the choice, I know it was the right one. Thanks Mom!

For the Record

For the past couple of years I have been feeling the desire to record the words of wisdom and character traits my Mom has blessed my life with. I always want to remember these most valuable gifts I have been so grateful to enjoy. Listening to the Apostle Elder Ballard's talk in General Conference today inspired me to truly focus on my Mom as my role model. I think we should talk about and let others know about our role models--so this is my opportunity to do so! I hope you can find inspiration in these words and that they will strengthen your own desire to admire and follow the virtuous, nurturing, strong, and faithful traits you see in your Mom.
